Academic Challenges essays

My interest in science led me to study the course that merges life with science into a career. Pursuing a life-long learning career in Pharmacy provides me with the satisfaction of never being motiveless. My aspiration in helping people with adequate knowledge reinforces my decision to study Pharmacy. I am also motivated by this course’s academic challenge, and I have committed to putting in the time and effort necessary to build a foundation of knowledge to ensure my success.

I have developed key skills beneficial for pharmacy. In applied science I acquired analytical and evaluative skills that will aid me in producing illustrated and written results. The practical side of the subject interests me even more, which involves working in a laboratory where I aim to project my passion in helping my community. I have developed research abilities through coursework which is a valuable skill in a pharmacy degree. My current project covers the cause and treatments for Ulcerative Colitis. My drive to research deeper into the roots of the disease prompts my interest in treatments for this disease and potential cure.

In Business studies, I have pursued a dedication to analytical thinking, coming to a justified chain of reasoning based on market research. The ability to investigate data and come to a cohesive conclusion will support my further reading of pharmacy. Health and Social Care elevates my observation and critical thinking skills to make suitable decisions. Making judgments supported by observation and critical thinking are vital skills for a pharmacist.

Throughout my life I have had the experience of living in various countries. Being trilingual (English, Dutch, Dari) has helped me explore pharmaceutical markets on a global scale and, as a pharmacist will eliminate language barriers in providing service to my community. Going through national lockdown taught me that the key to success is resilience; distance learning whilst coping with the Pandemic advanced my self-teaching skills, responsibility and time-management which was rewarded by my final grades.

During my work experience at my local pharmacy, I quickly recognised the significance of communication on the treatment provided. Carrying out tasks such as stock control and delivering prescriptions made me realise the importance of multi-tasking whilst delivering an effective service as a pharmacist. I developed strong relationships between my peers and superiors throughout my academic studies, which privileged me to work with diverse cultures and behaviours. This supplied my confidence and teamwork abilities in approaching and treating different people, which I believe is expected as a pharmacist.

Reading ‘Pharmacy Times’ regularly is something I enjoy doing to keep up with the latest pharmaceutical developments. I recently read an article about how patients’ mental health can be improved by a stronger connection between prescribers and pharmacists. From this, I comprehend how empowering patients results from the teamwork of different care professionals in a multi-disciplinary setting. Outside academics, I take pleasure in socialising, sports and baking to relieve my stress.

Being a prefect allows me to build a caring nature towards my junior student’s mental wellbeing whilst developing my problem-solving skills through active listening and advising solutions to problems—a key skill for the course. I was also a peer reading and mentor, helping mentees progress through their academic lives during my free and private times which provide self-satisfaction and accomplishment. This boosts my self-esteem which will not only help me in my future career but also university life.

I am an independent, committed, and keen individual who is ready to face the academic challenge of Pharmacy at your university. I believe that ‘knowledge is the power’ and by pursuing a job in this field, I aim to empower my community in the future as a professional Pharmacist.
