Imagine how much you love and care for your pet dog and then imagine how will it make you feel if people were debating if his breed should be banned or not. Would you like a Labrador, a German Shepherd, or any other breed of dog to become inaccessible to humans? Of course not. Unfortunately, that is how about 4 million pit bull owners feel when people say that their beloved pet dogs should be banned. For years the all-in-all picture many people have about pit bulls is that they are big bad mean dogs. But not all pit bulls are bad, it’s mostly just fear and prejudice in everybody's head. In fact, some pit bulls can actually be and are great dogs.
One reason for people to change their mind about pit bulls is that they’re humans’ work companion. They have been since after World War I, when they were brought by English and Irish men to different countries as stated by many reports. These strong dogs were kept as guardians, workers and herders. After all, they are described as short hair dogs with muscles.

Second, I think that it's unfair that people mistrust pit bulls because of false reports and social media. For example, many news outlets consistently tell animal control officers that they will not cover a dog attack unless the situation involves a pit bull, so many people tend to lie about the breed that bit them. Also, the media intentionally over-reports incidents involving pit bulls, while keeping silent on attacks committed by dogs with better reputations, such as Labradors and that is very unfair against pit bulls.
Some people may argue that pit bulls should be banned because they are dangerous. Those who believe this say that they are vicious and not cut out to be pets. They also say that they are more likely to attack people more than other dog breeds. The evidence, however, overwhelmingly shows the fact that pit bulls get blamed for a lot of attacks they have no hand in. Moreover, many of these short-haired, muscular dogs are mixed breeds that look similar to one another, although they have different genetic backgrounds. Dogs commonly mistaken for pit bulls are mastiffs, boxers, and American bulldogs. So, you see it’s not always a pit bull responsible for the attack, maybe it’s just another dog with a big resemblance.
Pit bulls are being put in the spotlight for bad reasons, but it's up to us to stand up for them. Even though some people say that they are heartless creatures, they are mistaken. Pit bulls are loving, cuddling pet dogs and most likely if they act in a mean way, it's the owners' fault for not knowing how to deal with them or raising them correctly. We need to stop blaming them for every dog attack. We need to give them fair laws. We need to stand up for ourselves and our pit bulls. We need to change. We need to give them a chance.
