Personal Motivations
I have always had a passion for learning and knowledge. My early educational experiences helped to shape this. My grandparents emigrated from Mexico as small children and made education a top priority for my mother and uncles. They, in turn, transferred this aspiration to my cousins and me. From a very young age, my cousins and I often found ourselves exploring our local library and dreaming of "growing up" and going to high school and college someday. I got lucky in life; my grandmother's motivation wasn't for free. She would always tell me that she loved me too much to let me fall into her same situation. I had a support system that I cannot stress enough the importance of, and I'd never wish my socioeconomic status on any young child. Access to quality, affordable areas to learn will forever be a battle in America, but what's important is that we allow the mothers', the grandparents', and the children's aspirations and limitations—a socioeconomic bias, if you will—to drive them toward their big moment under the lights, making a proud parental figure (or academic).
I also hope this piece provides a space for others to be proud of what they're doing, no matter how big or small it may be to someone else. I'm no Messiah coming down from the mountain, and most people never have the grandeur or stick a chord with society like I was able to. But that's the point here; mine is a unique story to my individual experience. Mom and Dad, Grandpa, Grandma, uncles, and aunts—the world over—some will have one master’s degree and some will have none, and they'll all hold different spots, silently or loudly, in service to society. But I am no better off today for having had my time with any of the institutions of learning than any of those who didn't utilize them. Am I better for being a mind turned into a thinker? Absolutely. No amount of book reading and heeled feet could have taught me the life I've lived, bringing me to my love of the colleges. The question is, will one of the briefer chapters of my lifetime prove true—that institutions of higher education are a mere stepping stone for the looming business world tendencies?
