Becoming a counselor has been my dream for several years now. The thought of helping people overcome their problems and live fulfilling life gives me immense satisfaction. Counseling is one of the most rewarding professions that allow individuals to significantly impact people's lives. My dream has been to become a counselor and help others overcome their problems and achieve their goals.

I've been thinking a lot lately about why I chose to study counseling. Ever since my first year at uni, I've noticed how my classmates often come to me with their problems - whether it's study stress or personal stuff. For as long as I can remember, people have just felt comfortable opening up to me about their stuff, and honestly, I really love being there to help them work through whatever they're dealing with.

Through my classes and the time I've spent volunteering, I've gotten to see firsthand how powerful it is when someone really listens and helps you figure things out. It's amazing how much of a difference that can make in someone's life!

Three big things really draw me to counseling:

  • First, I just click with people naturally, and they seem to trust me with their stories
  • Plus, I'm genuinely fascinated by how our minds work (my psych classes are literally my favorite!)
  • And I really want to help break down the stigma around mental health in our community

Why I want to be a counselor? It's just... I've seen how having that one person who really sits there and listens can totally flip things around when you're struggling. Like, it makes all the difference, you know?

Desire to Help Others

The desire to help others has been a fundamental aspect of my personality for as long as I can remember. Witnessing people dealing with emotional and mental health issues has always touched me deeply. I am convinced that everyone deserves to lead a life full of happiness and contentment, and as a counselor, I believe that I can contribute to making that a reality for people. Being a part of a client's journey towards healing and growth is something that I am incredibly passionate about, and it gives me immense satisfaction to see them thrive.

Last year, I started volunteering at our school's support group. One day, my classmate came to me crying because of her anxiety before exams. I sat with her, listened to her worries, and shared some breathing exercises I learned from my psychology class. When she came back the next week, smiling and telling me how she managed her anxiety better, I felt so happy. These small moments showed me that I can really help people, even with just simple support and care.

Being a counselor goes beyond choosing a professional route; it is about finding a way to make people's lives better.

Passion for Psychology

From the moment I learned about psychology, I became enamored with the subject. Every time I explore another facet of human thought and feeling, I become even more motivated to discover more. When I see someone struggling with a problem, I always try to understand what's going on in their mind and how I can help them feel better.

I remember my first psychology class in high school - it opened up a whole new world for me. Our teacher showed us how our memories work and why we sometimes feel nervous in crowds. I got so interested that I started watching psychology videos and reading articles about mental health after school. Sometimes, I'd stay up late just reading about different ways to help people with anxiety or depression. My mom would tell me to go to sleep, but I couldn't - it was just too interesting!

During our class projects, we practiced counseling techniques with each other. Even though it was just practice, I loved seeing how my classmates felt better after talking about their problems. One time, my friend told me I was really good at listening and understanding her feelings. That meant so much to me and made me even more sure about becoming a counselor.

Importance of Mental Health

Mental health is often overlooked, but it is just as important as physical health. Mental health problems can impact every aspect of a person's life, from relationships to work performance. As a counselor, I can help people manage their mental health issues and improve their overall well-being.

Ability to Make a Difference

What really makes me want to be a counselor is seeing how I can help people feel better about their lives. When I volunteer at school, I see how just talking to someone can help them figure out their problems. Last semester, I helped a new student who was really shy and nervous about fitting in. We talked a few times, and I suggested some ways to meet new friends. A few weeks later, I saw her laughing with a group of classmates, and it made me feel so good inside.

There is no greater satisfaction than seeing someone achieve their goals and become the best version of themselves. The chance to make a positive impact on people's lives is what motivates me to pursue a career in counseling.

Empathy and Compassion

My friends often tell me I'm a good listener. When someone comes to me with a problem, I try to really understand how they feel, not just give quick advice. Last month, my friend was really upset about failing a test. Instead of just saying, "Don't worry," or "You'll do better next time," I sat with her and let her talk about how stressed and disappointed she felt. After a while, she told me she felt much better just because someone really listened to her.

I think this ability to understand others' feelings will help me be a good counselor. When people share their problems with me, they usually say they feel comfortable and safe. Even my younger sister says she likes talking to me about her problems because I never judge her. These moments make me realize that being able to truly understand and care about others' feelings is so important in counseling.

Education and Training

As of now, my activities and attending psychology classes are steps toward that dream. I have, so far, taken units on human development in which I did very well, and also basic counseling skills. I really enjoy our practical exercises where we practice active listening and helping skills with other students. My psychology teacher says I have a natural talent for understanding others' emotions. Next year, I plan to study counseling psychology at university. I want to learn more about helping teens and young adults because I feel I can relate to their struggles best. I'm especially interested in learning about anxiety and depression since these are such common problems among young people today.

Professional Growth

I love that counseling lets me keep learning new things. Since I enjoy art and drawing in my free time, I really want to learn how art can help people share their feelings when it's hard to find the right words. Look, there was this Korean friend of mine. She told me her family never accepted help for personal problems in any shape or form, which alone made her a different ball game compared to what I had seen. So, it made me think that I surely have many aspects to learn about assisting people from different cultures and backgrounds. And this somehow excites me even more about being a counselor; the learning never really stops.

Conclusion

The more I learn about counseling, the more I know this is what I want to do. It makes me happy when I can help my classmates feel better abou  their problems, and I love learning new things in psychology class. Even though I know it won't be easy, I'm ready for all the hard wo k ahead.

It requires patience, understanding, and constant learning. But seeing how I can help others, even in small ways now, makes me sure that this is what I want to do with my life.

I want to be the person who helps others find their way when they feel lost. I really want to help people feel better and deal with their problems. Every time I learn something new about psychology, I think about how I can use it to help someone who's struggling. When I imagine my future as a counselor, I get exited thinking about all the ways I can support people who need help. This isn't just about having a job - I really believe I can help make someone's life better every day.
