During winter break, I was walking to Concordia (downtown) and the day was cold as always. I went to a store to buy some food since I didn’t eat in the morning and I was really hungry. I went to Mcdonald’s to get a big trio. Right after making my order and picking up my food, I saw an old woman looking from the inside the fast food.
She was very old and she was only wearing a blanket in this cold weather. I took a minute and look at the situation. I told myself I could act like everyone and act as if she is invisible or I can give her my meal, so she will be able to stay inside the fast food in a warm place and she would have something to eat. I decided that it was important to give it to her since she might have not eaten for days and even if I am hungry, I could go home after my class and cook dinner for myself.
The woman was very grateful and she was happy that there are still people who care about people who are less fortunate. In my view, this act was very small since I have access to food most of the time but for her; it made a large impact in her life. I felt a sense of freedom on my way to class because I thought about the chance I had to have access to food and how she had to struggle every day to find some food. In terms of four types of freedom, the first one I experienced was freedom of domination which is breaking the bondage and releasing the victims (73). It was freedom of domination since the person was imprisoned within herself, she was on the street freezing without food and I help him overcome that, I deliberate her from the cold and hunger that she was suffering from. Also, another type of freedom that was involved is self-determination which is “exercising a significant role in authoring our own actions” (Melchin, 74).
This example is self-determination because I was determined to act on the situation, I first looked at the situation which is what is going on with her. Is she just looking etc? Then I evaluated the actions that I should take like do I give her a meal? Then I act on it which is going to see her and giving her a warm place to eat a meal. In Addition, there were two other types of freedom who was involved which are essential freedom “the capacity to exercise a determinate control over our actions through the operations of moral meaning and effective freedom: the limits of that capacity. What are the limits, skills virtues, etc…” (Melchin,75). The essential freedom took place when I decided to choose an action that is helping the woman and do it which is went seeing the woman. The effective freedom took place when the woman accept the meal and got inside. I achieved kindness when I decided to take action in this situation and act on it.
